Siamo nel 1938, la guerra è ancora lontana. Il radar non c’è e le ricognizioni della flotta si fanno lanciando con la catapulta idrovolanti, che poi ammareranno vicino alle grosse unità navali per essere recuperati con le gru. Il modello riproduce un aereo imbarcato sull’incrociatore leggero “Montecuccoli” (*), che in quel periodo proteggeva gli interessi italiani in Estremo Oriente durante la guerra cino-giapponese. Non ci sono colorazioni mimetiche; i velivoli hanno solamente grosse, visibili strisce rosse sulle ali.
Sottoscrivo in pieno le parole usate da un collega inglese, … questo modello della Special Hobby non è per principianti e mette continuamente in difficoltà. Ho dovuto usare tutti i trucchi e le malizie che conosco per raggiungere questo risultato. Fissare lo scarpone centrale è stato un incubo, come pure posizionare il motore. Per non menzionare le centinature…
(*) Il Montecuccoli partecipò a quasi tutte le battaglie navali in cui la Regia Marina fu coinvolta, ma non fu mai affondato. Sopravvisse alla guerra ed operò come nave scuola fino alla sua radiazione nel 1964 e successivamente demolito. Secondo i marinai, la nave era protetta dal fantasma del grande condottiero seicentesco Raimondo Montecuccoli, che spesso veniva visto aggirarsi per la nave.
Reconnaissance Seaplane IMAM Ro-43
1938, war was far. Radar was not available, so reconnaissance was performed by catapulting seaplanes who would later land near the ship to be recovered with a crane. The model reproduces a seaplane boarded on the light cruiser “Montecuccoli” (*), at that time cruising in Far-East to protect Italian interests during the sino-Japanese war. No camouflage at that time; only big, red stripes on the upper wings.
I fully agree with the words of an English modeller, The Special Hobby Ro-43 is not for rookies and will fight you all the way! I had to use every trick I know to achieve this result. Fixing the main float to the plane’s body was painful as the two front arms are too short and I had to scratchbuild mine. Fixing the engine correctly is also fairly difficult not to mention the rigging…
(*) Montecuccoli took part in almost all the battles the Regia Marina has been involved until 1943 and survived. After the war she acted as training ship for the post-war Italian Navy until her de-commissioning in 1964 and successively demolished. According to the sailors the ship was protected by the ghost of the seventeenth century commander Raimondo Montecuccoli, who was often seen wandering aroud.
