Il Macchi M.C. 205 “Veltro” è stato in assoluto uno dei migliori caccia della 2° Guerra Mondiale. Veloce, affidabile, elegante ed adeguatamente armato. Apparso però sulla scena troppo tardi ed in quantità troppo limitate per esercitare un qualunque effetto sull’andamento della guerra. Il suo utilizzo principale fu con l’ANR (Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana). Diede molto filo da torcere alle formazioni di bombardieri USAAF, abbattendo molti B-17 come pure i loro caccia di scorta, P-38 “Lightning” e P-51 “Mustang”. Quando scomparve dalla scena per scarsa produzione e penuria di pezzi di ricambio, gli equipaggi dell’ANR passarono sui Messerschmitt 109. Per gli equipaggi USA “fu un vero sollievo”…
Il modello qui riprodotto rappresenta un MC 205 del 1° Gruppo Caccia “Asso di Bastoni” dell’ANR nel 1944.
Sono visibili dettagli dell’abitacolo ed il “tubo di Venturi”, che serviva a caricare aria compressa per far funzionare l’armamento.
Altri dettagli sono relativi ai cannoncini Mauser da 20mm – finalmente i nostri caccia potevano combattere in condizioni di parità…
Sono inoltre visibili i radiatori supplementari dell’olio, caratteristici di questo aereo.
Dettaglio curioso: l’aereo rappresentato è stato ridipinto con la classica mimetizzazione della Luftwaffe, ma è rimasta in parte visibile la fascia bianca della livrea dei caccia della Regia Aeronautica.

The Macchi 205 has been for sure one of the best fighters during WW2. Fast, reliable, elegant and properly armed. But it was late and the limited number of units did not have any effect on the war progress. Their main use was with ANR (National Republican Air Force). They gave hard time to the the allied bomber formations, even if escorted by their top fighters, P-38 Lightning and P-51 Mustang. When they disappeared from the scene due to lack of spare parts and the pilots moved to Messerschmitt 109, for the allied crews “… it was a real relief…”.
This model is an MC 205, ANR 1st Fighter Group “Asso di Bastoni” (Ace of Clubs) during 1944.
Cockpit details can be noted; also the Venturi tube that sent compressed air to activate the machine-guns.
On the wings, Mauser 20mm guns. At last, our fighters could combat with parity.
Peculiar of this plane were the two oil extra cooler.
Interesting, this plane has been painted with the typical Luftwaffe camo; but the fuselage still shows the underlying large white strip of the previous Royal Air Force livery.
