Nato come obice semovente per l’artiglieria delle divisioni corazzate, il 75/18 montato in casamatta su scafo M14 si dimostro’ eccellente in nord-Africa per tiro teso controcarri, partecipando direttamente ai combattimenti. Era di fatto l’unico pezzo in grado di battere la pesante corazzatura degli Sherman che Montgomery stava ricevendo dagli USA, dopo le pressioni di Churchill in seguito alla perdita di Tobruk.
Nel 1943 si decise di montare sullo stesso scafo il più potente cannone da 75/34. In attesa che queste bocche da fuoco fossero disponibili, l’Ansaldo-Fossati predispose un prototipo di semovente installando il cannone da 75/32. Il prototipo non ebbe seguito.
Il semovente è qui rappresentato in assemblaggio nei cortili dell’Ansaldo, a Genova-Sestri. Lo scafo è un M14-41 di fresca produzione, non immatricolato, mentre i parafanghi sono recuperati da un M13-40 prima serie.
Self-propelled howitzer 75/32 prototype
designed as self-propelled howitzer for the armoured divisions, the 75/18 gun was installed in an open top casemate on Ansaldo M-41 chassis.
During north Africa campaign it proved to be excellent as a tank destroyer. It was in fact the only gun able to win the heavy armour of the Shermans just received from the US. They were an important support to Montgomery, obtained thanks to Churchill pressure after the lost of Tobruk.
During 1943 it was decided to mount on the same chassis the more powerful 75/34 gun. Waiting for the availability of these barrels, Ansaldo made an attempt with the 75/32 gun, but this prototype had no follow up.
The unit is shown during the final assenbly in the Ansaldo factory yard, in Genova. The chassis is a M14-41, while the fenders derive from a M13-40 Mk I.
